Unified data collection

The APG server can collect and centralize data from almost any source, including, but not limited to:

  • SNMP: APG comes with a multi-threaded, distributed SNMP v1/2c/3 poller. An embedded Mib Browser/Compiler allows for viewing and compiling any standard or vendor specific MIB to collect SNMP variables.
  • Cisco Netflow: as a Netflow receiver, APG compiles traffic statistics from Netflow enabled devices.
  • Corporate data: various generic adapters can be used to import performance data or inventory information from text files, xml files, SQL databases and home-grown tools.
  • Best-In-Class management applications support: adapters for EMC|SMARTS, Cisco Call Manager, VMWare Console, EMC Control Center, BMC Remedy.

Once collected, all data is processed the same way to ensure conciliation and cross-domain performance analysis, providing users an end-to-end
visibility across the entire infrastructure.

Self-maintaining database

APG uses several aggregation functions, such as the average, minimum, maximum, sum, etc. Data is stored on a persistent storage system. APG supports MySQL, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Enterprise. The APG server is self-maintaining and requires no database manipulation.

Predictive Analysis

Threshold analysis is performed in order to detect performance degradation or service level violations. In addition, APG includes Exceptions reports, which list past and current violations, as well as TopN ranking reports to quickly identify stressed resources across a large network. APG does baseline analysis and forecasting calculations to automatically detect atypical behaviours and alert on potential risks.

Real-time and Historical reporting

Users access reports by using the web-based portal. All reports display the latest data (real-time) available, but it is possible to scroll in the past for historical analysis. Additionally, users can schedule a report for email generation – and send it in different formats ( .pdf or .csv for example). APG provides multiple ways to access reports quickly and efficiently. A navigation tree provides a simple but powerful method for viewing the reports. In addition, a built-in search provides a quick access to reports.

Native Integration with EMC|Smarts

When used in conjunction with the EMC|SMARTS suite, APG automatically polls data from each EMC|SMARTS domains, instead of polling the network devices, thus eliminating double polling. Furthermore, APG eliminates the ongoing report maintenance because it adapts automatically to changing environments: a report is created as soon as a device or interface is discovered by EMC|Smarts. Supported domains include AM/PM, SPM, BIM, ACM, SIA and Dynamic Module. Others points of integration exist between the two products: a context-sensitive APG view in the
EMC|Smarts dashboard; historical reports on the EMC|Smarts notifications; and health analysis of EMC|Smarts applications.

A Scalable, Distributed Architecture

A single APG server can manage thousands of devices and process millions of indicators. You can also deploy several APG servers to support the growing load.
